How to Make Homemade Oatmeal Lotion

Homemade lotion is easy to make using oatmeal. It is also soothing and good for the skin.

It is easy to make versatile homemade oatmeal lotion that can be used by the entire family. It is also economical to prepare when compared to similar, commercially prepared oatmeal lotion, and making it requires no special equipment or supplies. Oatmeal is a traditional remedy for itchy, dry skin. It also helps to keep the skin smooth. All it takes is to place a few ounces of this lotion in an attractive container to create a unique homemade gift.

You Will Need:

Essential oils (optional)

unscented lotion, 24 oz.

Rolled Oats, 1/2 cup

Medium bowl

Wire whisk

Spoon

Funnel

Bottles or jars with lids

Gather your Materials

Gather the materials you will be using to make your oatmeal lotion. Most health food stores carry the ingredients you need. If you intend to add fragrance to your lotion, choose an essential oil. You should purchase a good quality unscented lotion for your base and old-fashioned slow cooking rolled oats rather than processed quick oats.

Cleanliness is Essential

Ensure that your equipment, your work surface and your containers are clean. It is important to pay attention to cleanliness whenever you are preparing creams and lotions, especially when the ingredients include food products or preservatives are not added.

Prepare Colloidal Oatmeal

Grind 1/2 cup of the oatmeal in a blender to make colloidal oatmeal, which is simply very finely ground oatmeal. Use the highest setting and grind the oatmeal to a fine powder. You will probably need to stop every 30 seconds or so in order to scrape the sides of the blender.

Mix all Ingredients

Pour your base lotion into a medium bowl. Slowly add the essential oil, drop by drop, until the lotion has the intensity of fragrance that you like best. Use the wire whisk to blend the oil into the base lotion. Essential oil is powerful, so add it cautiously. Mix the colloidal oatmeal into the lotion as you continue to stir with the whisk. Keep mixing until all of the ingredients are evenly distributed.

Let it Rest

Place a clean towel over the bowl and leave it for 12 hours. The lotion will be thicker than when it was first mixed. You can always add more lotion if you find it to be too thick.

Final Steps

Transfer the lotion to the containers. You can use a spoon for wide mouth jars or a funnel if you have decided to place your lotion in bottles. Replace the lids and your homemade oatmeal lotion will be ready to use.
